ARIES is a software-based product. They not only buy the pure hardware, but the complete Lightning platform, which provides many services. And much more is possible in the future.
AURALiC's software team, which works completely in-house, is constantly developing the ARIES firmware and the LightningDS app and delivering updates every month.
AURALiC has released several industry premieres since ARIES was first presented in January 2014. He is the first product that:
- DSD and even Double-DSD over a wireless connection allows
- much like a computer can output music via USB to a DAC. ARIES can do that far beyond the 192kHz / 24 bit limit. A computer is no longer necessary.
- has its very own control app, which has a native integration of QObuz and WiMP and supports these two streaming services simultaneously.
- all the great things for a great price of only 1000 Euro made possible.
Between July 2014 and May 2015, AURALiC has delivered the following new features to its customers through automatic updates:
- October 2014: Integration of TIDAL as another streaming service
- November 2014: Unlock the support of USB storage
- February 2015: improving sound quality
- May 2015: Support of quad DSD via the wireless connection
- July 2015: Integration of Lughting Server as an integral part
This is far from the end. We have a long list on our roadmap that is fully planned out to 2017. These include integrating Roon Labs, group playback, DSD upsampling, room correction, and more.
Data, Quotes Company Audionext:
ARIES acts as a bridge between the music files in the home network or those at online music services and an existing D / A converter. Thanks to ARIES, it can now be controlled quickly and wirelessly with high-resolution music of all sampling rates and formats including DSD, double-rate DSD and DXD.
ARIES is based on AURALiC's proprietary Tesla hardware platform, which features a quad-core ARM Cortex-A9 1 GHz processor, 1 GB DDR3 memory, and 4 GB internal storage. The Tesla platform has a processing power of 25.000 MIPS, more than enough to decode a huge range of audio formats, such as AAC, AIFF, ALAC, APE, DIFF, DSF, FLAC, MP3, OGG, WAV, WV and WMA.
The inputs include dual-band high-speed WiFi, Gigabit Ethernet and USB 2.0. On the output side, ARIES has coaxial and optical S / PDIF connectors, an AES / EBU interface and a USB host audio interface implemented with AURALiC's patented ActiveUSB ™ technology. Via USB, ARIES PCM delivers formats from 44,1 to 384 kHz for 16, 24 and 32 bit resolution as well as DSD and Double-Rate DSD to compatible USB D / A converters. The other digital outputs are limited to max. 192 kHz and 24 bit limited.
By using the OpenHome structure, which is also used by the UK manufacturer of streaming solutions LINN, ARIES (as well as other products with the AURALiC Lightning technology) has advanced features such as on-device playlists that disable the control app in the Playback mode, as well as full multi-room operation and the simultaneous use of multiple control apps. Both are functions that are not part of the classic protocols like UPnP and DLNA.
ARIES ships with AURALIC's Lightning DS app. This app allows you to fully control ARIES, browse your music files to NAS (Network Attached Storage) devices, stream high-quality music content from music services such as Qobuz and WiMP, control playback, and configure hardware such as output selection and setting WiFi parameters. The app also supports Songcast, a music distribution system that allows you to route your computer's audio output to any Lightning family device, connect music between different Lightning devices, and stream through Apple AirPlay.
Currently, the Lightning DS app for iOS is available in two different for the iPad and the iPhone.
ARIES is also compatible with other control apps of the OpenHome or UPnP AV family, such as Linn Kinsky and BubbleDS, but these apps do not support the advanced features of the Lightning DS app, such as online streaming and hardware settings.
As a special feature, the ARIES has an 3-inch OLED display, which can be controlled at any time the playback status, as well as an AURALiC RC-1 remote control for basic functions such as play, pause and jump title without having to try the Lightning DS app.
